# Design

MGC was a friendly reminder of how turn based games require a lot of tuning to get right.

I had a lot of ideas on my head for what I wanted to build; leveling, a job system, recruitable characters… but all of this sounded way easier in my head as usual, so a lot of the specifics had to be pruned back to deliver a few levels with minimal progression.

Some abilities got some effects, but due to time constraints a decent chunk are just tweens. One early compromise we made was to make character sprites sit on little pedestals, like warhammer figures. This helped curb player expectations for any kind of animation, because yeah no. Boxman went pretty high resolution here for pixel art, so there would have been way too much pixel pushing needed to even do idle loops.

I think it mostly turned out OK, but there’s a pretty clear need for more depth even at its current length.

# Writing

I… Don’t remember writing any of this. I clearly did, and it’s pretty awful even by my standards. It probably got crammed in at the last minute.
